It was pretty brutal.

This is one of the most overlooked but important things about this industry that most people will never get. You see it’s all great and good if you are a part of a good business and you understand that you HAVE TO learn how to market, but if you don’t have a good mentor to guide you through the “dark” along your journey, most never become truly successful in their business.

What do I mean?

Simply put, this is a tough industry.

Well after all that failure and heartache, I decided that the ONLY way I was going to get the results I was looking for in my business, was to find someone who had what I wanted and stayed as close to them as humanly possible.

So, I searched and searched and finally connected with someone who shared very similar values to me, and to cut the long story short, he became my mentor.

Now I want to make this perfectly clear.

Just because you started off with your upline in some Network Marketing business DOES NOT make them your mentor.

I have personally been in 4 different opportunities myself, before finally figuring out what really works for me, and I can tell you that I never considered any of my uplines as my mentors. I mean they were great guys and some of them were successful, but they didn’t have what I wanted.

What do I mean by that?

Well, almost all of them were offline marketers. They had ZERO online marketing experience. And even though these guys had many good qualities in their own right, they didn’t understand how to build their business online, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do…

Build my business online!

So I decided that the best way to get what I was looking for, was to find someone that had those skills that I wanted to have myself, and get them to teach them to me.

And that’s exactly what I got.

Now, not only did I get guidance, I got the real in’s and out’s of how this business actually works and what is really possible.

I also got to mirror a lot of the techniques and strategies that my mentor used himself in his own marketing campaigns. Now when you have that type of leverage, it’s priceless!

If not for my mentor, I can personally say that I would never have been able to become a top earner in my business and would STILL be working in my financial job. Which would really stink!

So my friends, if you are floundering out there and you can’t figure out what you’re doing wrong inside of your business, you need to do one thing and one thing only….

STOP trying to do everything by yourself.

It’s much easier to build a successful business with experience and knowledge behind you instead of naivety and confusion.

It’s a fools errand, and everyone else is having fun, except YOU.

I ran across this short story today which was written by Stephen Covey and it just really hits home on so many different points when it comes to having success in Network Marketing that I felt compelled to share it with you today:

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees

“Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”

Very motivated by the boss’ words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked.

“Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees…”

The moral of this story is that sometimes, it’s not about how hard you work that makes the difference. It’s about how “smart” you work. Also, when it comes to growing your Network Marketing business, it’s about keeping your “tools” sharp. And in our industry, our “tools” are our skill set. Now different people have different ideas about what skill set is important in Network Marketing. For me personally, the number 1 money making skill set is – MARKETING. If you don’t keep your Marketing skills sharp, it is very unlikely that you will have ANY success or lasting wealth in this industry.

It’s also important to not get too caught up with just “trying” to be busy. If you’re being busy doing non-productive activities, how is that going to help you move forward in your business? I see this happen time and time again and it’s just a matter of getting organized and spending more time on “income generating” activities and less time on things that won’t really increase your bottom line.

Lastly, just because you have been “cutting trees” for years does not mean that you cut trees well. You may have been “cutting trees” the wrong way for years and have picked up many bad habits along the way. So be prepared to take a good look at yourself and remember that there is always room for improvement.

So, spend more time on sharpening your skill set and success will follow suit.

If it means that you need to fill a room up with hundreds of people every single week, stand in front of them, and present your business opportunity like a professional public speaker, before you gain any real headway in your business, then no wonder the failure rate in Network Marketing is so high.

It’s impossible!

So it’s easy to see that duplication is not the answer.

Because unfortunately, most of us “normal” people don’t possess the prowess that it often takes to build a huge Network Marketing organization the traditional offline way.

BUT – don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom.

Because if you have a SYSTEM that people can follow step by step and apply themselves, then this is what really builds success.

A system that teaches you the best way to approach people, to attract and market to people all over the world and a system that leverages the most powerful tool on this planet – The Internet.

That’s how you create success.

The best part is, not everyone uses a system exactly the same way. See, you might use it a little differently than I do. But the point is that you have guidelines and instructions to follow so you don’t get lost and confused.

And if you’re not an Alpha personality who can make people follow you like the “Pied Piper” can, then hey, it’s okay!

Because you don’t need to do that when you have a good system in place.

- Listened to your upline

When I first got started with Internet Marketing, I thought the whole idea was to get as much of your content out into the world as humanly possible. Which is true – to a certain extent.

So what I did was record one video every single day for 100 days. And I thought the leads would start pouring in!

Boy was I ever wrong…

What ended up happening, was my videos got LOST and swallowed up in the “sea” that is the Internet. Sure, there are hundreds of millions of people on video sites like Youtube watching videos everyday. But are they watching YOUR videos? That is the question.

So I started to realize that it wasn’t about dumping a HUGE amount of content out into cyberspace that works. It’s more about “strategically” placing content in such a way that you will get huge exposure and in return drive massive amounts of traffic to you.

So if you’re recording videos, writing articles or doing any of that sort on a daily basis and just dumping it all over the Internet and keeping your fingers crossed that people will find your stuff and you’ll generate lots of  leads – you need to STOP!

It’s a fools errand.

Really…

This is the part of “Marketing” that people DON’T teach. You have to figure it out yourself unfortunately. And most realize only after they have done all the hard work.

How annoying!

Well, if you’re still interested in leveraging off the millions of viewers on Youtube and want to know how to really draw attention to your business….

Here’s what to do:

1. Search for popular things on Youtube that you know would draw A LOT of viewership. For example: rock bands, movies, famous people, funny videos etc.

2. Only look at videos that have 250,000 or more views. The more the better. I like videos with 1,000,000+ views! If you’re going to leverage off these guys, let’s do it right!

3. Keep in mind that certain age groups and demographics watch different things. So when you have found your video, click on the arrow button next to the “views” and a drop down menu will show you the full demographics and location of people who watch the video. If the demographics fit your business model, then you’ve just found your perfect video.

4. Check the viewership graph to make sure that views are continuing to increase over a period of time. You don’t want a video that is getting less and less popular.

5. Send the owner of the video a personal message over Youtube telling them that you’re interested in doing some business with them regarding their video and it involves $$. Sometimes it takes people a while to respond so send as many messages out to as many video owners as you can on a daily basis. It takes some time, but it’ll be worth it.

6. When you get a response, tell them that you’d be willing to give them $20/year (this is up to you) to put an annotation on their video. The annotation would say something like “Bob Smith shows you how to earn $3,357 a week from home. See how by clicking the link in the description box below”. Then make sure you get them to put your capture page link in the description. Ta da!

This is a pure guerrilla marketing tactic.

How it works is, you are counting on pure volume. People that are watching a video will see your “ad” (annotation) pop up, and a certain percentage of them will be compelled to take a look at your offer because they are curious…

That’s how this strategy works.

Now if you get the right videos and a lot of them, you can create a real steady stream of leads flowing into your business on a daily basis.
