I think the highlight for me at the end of last year must have been winning the Carbon Copy PRO Master Marketing Award.

This is the scenario.

Imagine over 1000 people in a packed hall in the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, and after a long content filled marketing session with prizes being won and money being thrown around they finally announce the awards for the top producers in the business.

Aaron Parkinson gets up on stage and says, “And next, we would like to award this years Master Marketing Award to….. Aaron Chen! Come up and get your award Aaron.”

People start clapping and cheering. And then a long pause. Everyone looks around.

Aaron Parkinson repeats, “Aaron Chen, come up and get your award.”

Again a long pause.

“I could have sworn I saw him at dinner last night…”

Where the heck is Aaron?

Wasn’t he sitting right there a second ago?

Everyone is staring at my team mate Chris who I had been sitting next to the entire day. And the poor guy is looking at everyone staring at him while shrugging his shoulders implying he has no idea where I am.

So anyway, the long story short, I missed my moment of glory up on stage in front of the entire company. That one moment that every marketer aims to achieve and savour when they get to the top.

Well – I missed it!

So here’s what happened. It had been a long day of training. And since it was the last day of the event, I had planned to take my entire team out for dinner and drinks right after the event. Now the event was scheduled to end at 5pm, and when I looked at my watch it was already 6pm and Aaron and Jay (the Co-founders) had, what I thought, started to wind the day down.

So I stepped out thinking that it was drawing to a close to handle some last minute preparations for my team and get ready for the dinner, not knowing that I was winning an award that evening. So when they started calling my name and was no where to be found, I got a flood of text messages coming to my phone, with the likes of…

“Where the $&*@ are you? They are calling your name…”

“Oh my god Aaron! Get in here man!!”

“Dude….where did you go?!”

At which point I was screaming pulling my hair out. But of course, I wasn’t even close to the hall and so couldn’t get back in time to jump up on stage.

Ah….my moment of glory gone!

So anyhow, I tracked Aaron and Jay down that night and got my award. You should have seen the grin on Aaron Parkinson’s face.

So eventhough my night of glory didn’t really play out the way I had imagined in my head, it still feels pretty freaking good, to have come out on top and to win this prestigious award.

Hopefully your moment of triumph will turn out a little different from mine. But I’ll tell you one thing, it makes one hell of a story.
