If you were there, you know how much value and training was given to everyone in attendance. Nothing airy fairy, just real life changing material; both online marketing skill wise and mindset wise needed to illicit a strong response to push people forward in their business. As one of our members Paul Shippee said during a coffee break to me, “This is the best event I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a few. It’s how can I put it? Very real and you feel like it’s being run by real people.”

Besides getting lots of sun, fun and getting to mastermind with some of the biggest names in our entire industry (had drinks with the likes of Jonathan Budd and Mark Hoverson) we also got to spend some intimate time with people in our team. People like Guy, Pamela, Paul, Irene, Lindsay, Bonnie, Pierre, Jordan, just to name a few. Who flew from different corners of the globe to get in on the action and get intimate secrets that only a live event of this magnitude can give you. Just ask any of them and they’ll tell you they got what they needed and more.

It didn’t stop there though. PRO absolutely dropped a bomb when they annouced the changes that were being rolled out that would simply change the face of the entire industry. Here are some of the things they have added to the “new” PRO ELITE business model (remembering that they have been ahead of the curve for years up until now):

This cute little poem has extreme significance when looking at being a home based entrepreneur. And if you’re reading my blog right now, then chances are, you are probably one of them.

And I always tell my students and team that it is a journey. Getting to the top of ANY business, let alone Network Marketing takes effort, time and lots of tenacity.

The important thing to remember is that this business is a marathon, NOT a sprint. The sprinters are usually the ones who get burnt out quickly with no results and then end up whining, complaining then quitting.

I hope you are NOT that type of person.

So one of the main things I did when I was there was attend the 2010 Asian X Games.

That’s basically where all the best extreme athletes from all over the world come down and compete in events like Skateboarding, Inline and BMX. I attend this event each year cause the Mrs. likes to work with the ESPN team and I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie plus I use to skate. So it’s right up my alley.

Anyway, this is some of the footage that I captured over the weekend.

As I was watching these athletes get 15 feet of air above the ramps and do double back flips amongst other crazy tricks, I thought to myself, these guys are real professionals.

I mean, they aren’t just a bunch of delinquents out there jumping around randomly on skateboards. No way.

This is their job!

These guys are at the top of their game. They make 6 figures a year in endorsements and prize money to travel around the world and execute some of the most dangerous and amazing stunts in their sport.

These guys don’t joke around.

They practice every single day.

And I can tell you one thing. They make it look so easy, but when you talk to them and they tell you about all the bones they have broken to get them to this point in their career, it’s a reality check. And you realize that this profession takes real skill.

And then it reminded me of Network Marketing and how us marketers are just like these skaters. Now of course we aren’t extreme athlete’s, but we are professionals. And to make it big in this business, you need to be at the top of your game, just like a professional athlete.

To be a top marketer, you have to hone your skills. You need to develop your craft.

You need to be willing to invest time and money into developing those skills.

You can’t just expect to become a top marketer over night.

Just like BMX, inline and skateboarding, it requires constant practice and adjustment. It requires being beat up and falling over before you can understand how to execute a move the right way. We need to pick ourselves back up when we fall over and try to execute that move again until we succeed.

And if you don’t compete at the top level with all the other professional marketers, then you won’t be able to command the level of income that these professionals do.

Yes. Network Marketing is like extreme sports.

It may look easy. But we all know that it really isn’t.

It takes practice. Lots of hard work. Determination. And the willingness to pick ourselves up over and over again until we win!

Now if this seems obvious to you, what you probably never realized is that every big marketer in our business has to go through this process. No one has it easy.

Speak to any big marketer in our business and ask them about their story. I guarantee that they have ALL “broken many bones” getting themselves to the top of this game.

Yup, went back to where I was based for 5 years just to take a break and see some old friends. Maybe check out the 2010 Expo that everyone is talking about.

And I actually do like to put in a bit of time into work while I’m on vacation since I can basically plug in from anywhere. So right now I’m sitting in my hotel lobby just trying to upload some videos onto Youtube and comment on some blog posts etc.

But guess what?!

I’ve been away from China for so long that I completely forgot that almost ALL the social sites are banned here!

Can you freakin believe that?!

And I couldn’t figure it out for 15 minutes. I kept trying to refresh Facebook and Youtube and nothing was working. Then I remembered that they basically control the flow of information very heavily on the Internet here, especially on social sites.

So this vacation, has now ended up being a REAL vacation, because I literally CANNOT work!

HA!

No Facebook. No Twitter. No Youtube.

Holy crap!

Some would call that a blessing in disguise I suppose

But this reminds me of the times I was living here and had to struggle through this obstacle for months! What a pain!

Man, that just goes to show how far I’ve come and how good we all have it outside of China. I mean, can you imagine if you were trying to build your online business and you had your arms tied behind your back?!

That’s basically what the situation is, if you were living in this part of the world.

So, this right here, is a lesson to us all.

If you think you have it bad. You don’t.

I had to deal with this problem on a monthly basis and I still figured a way around it. It was a pain in the behind, but I still managed to get A LOT done.

So when you find yourself in a jam and it feels like life is crumbling down all around you, take a deep breath and figure it out.

Remember that only the strong survive in this business, and if you let small problems like the biggest social sites in the world getting banned in your part of the world (heh heh) slow you down, then you’ll never make it.

And since I am on vacation, I can’t be bothered right now jumping through all those hoops just to upload my video onto Youtube. So I’ll wait till I get back to Malaysia.

People always ask me what the secret to success is. What is the one thing I would recommend to make a Network Marketing business successful? And my answer is always the same. There is NO secret. Unfortunately, there isn’t ONE single piece of advice, information or action that you can use to move your business from a brand new entity to a well-oiled, money making machine.

Just like any business that you try to start up, it requires lots of blood, sweat and tears. Literally. It requires long hours of testing, tweaking and changing to see what really works. It requires strong resolve and the ability to overcome your weaknesses in the face of adversity. It requires a strong will and the blind passion of an entrepreneur to push forward when everyone tells you to stop dreaming. But most importantly, it requires an unwavering belief that you will make it!

If there really is a secret to being successful in this business and anything in life, this would be it.

Results really come from hard work. From being patient and persistent and always staying the course. Continually educating yourself and improving your skill set as well as having a positive attitude.

In addition to that, you absolutely must have a good mentor who can support you. A first class marketing system to give you the right training and tools you need to succeed. And of course a solid business with products that people actually need (not just another juice, pill, potion or cream company) that has a powerful compensation plan that actually rewards you for the effort you put in.

And yes, it does require you to put in effort.

If you can put these things in place, then success for you will be inevitable.

What a ride…

And if you don’t know what I’m referring to, I’m talking about the journey and success I’ve had inside of Network Marketing.

I’m sure most of you have already heard my story, but for those of you who haven’t, I’m going to let you in on a little ‘insider knowledge’.

Success for me wasn’t an option!

It really started in another recession back in 1997, which was very similar to the one we’re going through right now. I was in my last year of university and things weren’t looking up. My family was nearly wiped out and there was a big chance I wasn’t going to graduate.

“What the heck am I going to do without a degree?…”, I thought to myself.

It was scary times.

And if any of you have been through a situation like this before, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

But by a stroke of luck or pure determination from my dad, we scrapped through. I graduated. And from then on I made a promise to myself that finances would never be a problem for me or my loved ones ever again.

So I moved to Shanghai, China. Big lights, big city. The New York of the East where there was tons of opportunity to make some real dosh.

I joined a financial brokerage firm and became the youngest top earner in the firm in my first year. Made 6 figures a year, ran a team and was achieving everything that I set out to do.

Well almost.

I didn’t realize that along with a high paying corporate job came massive responsibilities which sapped up 12 hours of my day, 6 days a week! And after doing that for 5 years…. I was burnt out!

There’s something seriously wrong with this world if someone has to work those kinds of hours even if the pay is good.

There has to be more to life than this.

So I went searching. And funnily enough, stumbled onto…. that’s right, Network Marketing.

Was a little skeptical at first like the next guy, but that disappeared quickly after I realized how massive this industry actually is and what it could offer me. So I jumped in, head first. And after having little success using offline strategies – you know what I’m talking about. Friends and family, cold calls, buying leads online etc etc etc… Yeah total BS. I moved my business online.

Now I wish I could say that the Internet saved the day and I became a millionaire the next month.

Ha!

Not a chance!

And if you think that you can become successful that quickly (1 week, 1 month!), what planet are you from? The last time I checked this was planet Earth. And in the real world, the only way you can have real success is through hard work and patience!

Unless of course, you know something that I don’t. In that case you can always call me…

So I slogged it out. 3 months….became 6 months….became 9…. and then something really special happened.

Everything clicked.

All those months of training, learning, testing, and tweaking…..started paying off.

And just like that…

I quit my corporate job, moved back to Malaysia and now live a lifestyle that most people only dream about.

Now… the moral of this story is that you need to be realistic about the goals you set yourself in your business. And of course, that this industry is not for the weak. And if you are serious about becoming a successful entrepreneur in the network marketing industry, it’s going to require lots of work, focus and tenacity.

Anything less and you’re just fooling yourself.

The best part is, I finally made it onto a very exclusive list that my business releases every single week. I am now among GIANTS, and if you ask me, it feels pretty damn good.

Just a little bit of motivation for you guys. Remember this industry is 10% ability and 90% heart!

Never give up. Keep pushing. Keep learning. Keep providing tons of value.

Also, remember to focus and take consistent action EVERY single day!!

But is it really all that peachy? Since the failure rate for this industry is something ridiculous like 97%, I guess it’s not! But – having said that, there is an easy way and a hard way to do everything isn’t there? That I will leave for another post. For today, like the title says, I will talk about how this industry can give you, like it gave me, the best of both worlds. The perks of the corporate and the freedom of the non-corporate.

As long as I can remember, all my ex classmates would ever talk about was applying to the best companies. Accenture, KPMG, McKinsey, PWC . You won’t believe how many people I know that work in Accenture! Now don’t get me wrong. These are all great companies. But why is it that all fresh grads only think about applying to the top companies in the world? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that it all comes down to one thing – money.

Hey, I didn’t know any better. I am guilty of exactly the same thing. Big corporate companies do offer great perks. Let’s list them out:

1. Good salaries
2. Large bonuses
3. Good career progression – which leads to higher salaries
4. Large stipends

You get the idea. Sounds great doesn’t it? Who in their right mind wouldn’t want these things? I sure would. And that’s why I did it. But again, all these things are based around one large factor – money. Now all good things come at a cost. And in the corporate world, it’s time. The job starts to own you. And then you realize that you have less and less time to enjoy the thing that you worked so hard to get. What’s the point?!

Unfortunately, most people don’t discover this until it’s too late. But when you’re bombarded by parents and friends telling you to go for the best, it’s difficult to look anywhere else. But there is a better way. A way to achieve balance. And I found it in the most unlikely place. The Network Marketing industry.

It’s not for everyone. But for those of you who are considering this industry. It can offer you something that most industries don’t have the capacity to. It’s all the good stuff I mentioned at the start. And no, it’s not too good to be true. Because, yes, you do have to work for it. But for the same amount of work, this industry can give you the best of both worlds. It also gives you something that is just as important as money. And sometimes even more important than money. Time. Time with your friends. Time with your family. Time to skydive, travel the world or whatever it is that you love doing. Time to actually enjoy your money.

Now isn’t that worth considering?

It could be all those things. But I really think it comes down to what type of person you are. For me, working hard and being motivated wasn’t an option. You see, times were bad and after my family went through the Asian financial crisis of 1997, all I could think about back then was “please let me graduate”. Miraculously, we got through it. I got to shake our Dean’s hand and throw my graduation cap into the air. And from there, the opportunities were limitless! I promised myself that I would never put myself or my family in that position again. And I would do whatever it took to be successful.

So – I got a degree in Finance. “Get close to the money. Understand it, and you will be wealthy”. That’s what my Dad told me. He was right. I became a financial consultant and did very well. All I wanted to do from then on was go corporate. Work my way up the corporate ladder. Earn a nice cushy salary. And lap up the benefits. That was my life for a few years. Then the inevitable happened. And those of you in corporate jobs or have been in the past can relate to this.

The long hours did its toll on me. The 6 day weeks – were they worth it? The suits looked great at the start, but lost their sheen after a while. The politics were doing my head in. And the monotony of the job was killing me. I had to get out. And I had to get out fast! But is there life after going corporate? I didn’t think so at the start, but boy was I so wrong! Funnily enough, it was my Dad who introduced me to the world of Network Marketing as well. I guess your parents do know what they are talking about!

I have to admit that it was a little scary at the start. Should I leave the corporate world? Am I being silly for making such a huge change? I didn’t even know anything about this industry to begin with. Could it help me to be just as or even more successful? As I found out, definitely! But I did my research. I put in the time and learned as much as I could about it. And it paid off. I took that educated leap of faith and changed lines completely. I have never been happier.

Now, I have a friend who is also in a corporate job, and he does really well for himself. But he has so much potential and could do so much more. He would make a killing in this industry. And he keeps telling me he wants to be making tons of money. But he’s comfortable. He likes the safety. He likes the benefits. He likes the stability and doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Now I’m not saying that this is for everyone. A lot of people are perfectly comfortable with where they are. And that’s fine. But for those of you who want more. Who want to live the lifestyle. Who know you are capable of being hugely successful. Rock the boat! Take the plunge. Don’t hold back and don’t be afraid of the unknown. Do what it takes to get you to where you want to be. Stop talking about it and just do. Because until you do something about it, it’s exactly that. Talk.
